Sonya Carrasco-Trujillo Appointed Workers’ Compensation Judge
Albuquerque, N.M. June 2, 2023 – New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has appointed Sonya Carrasco-Trujillo to serve as a workers’ compensation judge for the Workers’ Compensation Administration. Her term will begin June 10, 2023.
Most recently, Carrasco-Trujillo was General Counsel for the Department of Military Affairs. She is a Major in the New Mexico Army National Guard, serving as the Brigade Judge Advocate for the 111th Sustainment Brigade in Rio Rancho.
Carrasco-Trujillo has made a long career in public service, which includes serving as Public Policy Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff for former Lt. Gov. Diane Denish; Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs for former Gov. Bill Richardson; Assistant General Counsel for the Department of Public Safety, among other executive positions. Additionally, she was the first attorney to be appointed Interim Municipal Court Judge for the City of Santa Fe in 2005.
A Santa Fe native and daughter of Dr. Frank Carrasco and Mrs. Maria Trujillo, she earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law. She is a graduate of St. Michael’s High School and Georgetown University, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in American government and sociology. Carrasco-Trujillo is married to retired New Mexico State Police Chief Robert Shilling. They are licensed resource parents living in Santa Fe with their daughters Sophia and Isabél. There are currently five workers’ compensation judge positions in the WCA’s Adjudication Bureau based out of Albuquerque and a newly created judge position in the WCA’s Las Cruces field office. Workers’ compensation judges hear and decide disputes over benefits due to injured workers throughout New Mexico. The Workers’ Compensation Administration works to assure the quick and efficient delivery of medical and indemnity benefits to injured workers at a reasonable cost to employers.
